DPV YAMAHA 500Li

Appeared in DIVER July 2018
I BLAME JACQUES COUSTEAU and his boys on Sunday tea-time telly. They were the reason I wanted to be a diver in the first place, and when they used electric sledges to power themselves through the water, I really wanted to have a go.
As it turned out I had to wait 40 years before I got the chance, but a few years on from that first try, and scootering still makes me grin from ear to ear.
I know, the only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys, but when John from Sea Scooter UK sent me the latest Yamaha 500Li for review, I came over all unnecessary.

FINGER-SPOOL SEA & SEA IST 30m

Appeared in DIVER July 2018
WHEN YOU GET RIGHT DOWN TO IT, delayed surface marker buoys are there for two reasons. First, they give you a personal ascent-line that you can deploy at any time, which means that wherever and whenever you surface you’ll still have a visual reference to help control your ascent-rate and hold stop-depths.
Second, your blob popping to the surface shows people where you are, which means a quicker pick-up by the boat, and limits the chances of you being missed and left drifting on an empty sea.

WETSUIT BARE VELOCITY ULTRA

Appeared in DIVER July 2018
RED BULL GIVES YOU WINGS was a great slogan, but we all know that it won't really help you fly. It's a catchy ad, that's all.
The maker of Celliant, the material that infuses the BARE Velocity's neoprene, promises well-being in its marketing. I’ve been on a promise before and been stood up. BARE says that the Celliant makes its suit an outstanding performer in cold water. But after the dive, would it leave me wet, shivering and disappointed, or imbue me with a satisfied warm afterglow inside?

BC ATOMIC BC1

Appeared in DIVER July 2018
US MAKER ATOMIC has positioned itself unashamedly at the top end of the market, with pricing to match. It doesn't do budget and it doesn't do anything less than top quality, so its new BC was always going to be interesting.
Then, when the product was ready to go, Atomic began its marketing push with the bold claim that it had started the project with a blank sheet of paper and reviewed every detail, no matter how small, to produce the best BC on the market. And that makes the newly released Atomic BC1 downright fascinating.
When you make that sort of claim, you need to deliver. I won't say I approached the review determined to pick fault with surgical accuracy and expose any and every shortcoming with tabloid hype, but if you want to think that, well, I won't argue.

UNDERSUIT OTTER POLAR-D

Appeared in DIVER June 2018
I'VE ALWAYS ENVIED THOSE PEOPLE who come out of the coldest water beaming from ear to ear and claiming to be toasty-warm. I have never, in the whole of my diving career, been toasty-warm after a coldwater dive.
Warm enough, yes, but that’s not the same thing at all. Then again, I suppose I've never actually missed a dive through being too cold to go back in, even on a three-dive day in sea water below zero at depth. And that brings me to the blessings of a decent undersuit.

ACTION CAMERAS - OLFI ONE-FIVE & GOXTREME BARRACUDA

Appeared in DIVER June 2018
IT ALL STARTED WITH the original GoPro, a video camera the size and shape of a box of matches. Add a housing capable of diving to reasonable depths and suddenly everybody not only wanted one, they went out and bought one, seduced by the ease of use and compact size of the package.
The quality of the underwater video wasn't great back then, but technology is improving at an exponential rate and the results achievable from action cameras today are remarkably good.
GoPro continues to dominate the market, but competitors such as the excellent Paralenz are keeping them honest and there's now a whole raft of models available at lower prices.
But what can you expect if you spend less? Here are a couple of recently released £150 action cameras that can answer the question for you.

FINS MARES EXCITE & EXCITE PRO

Appeared in DIVER May 2018
MARES IS SYNONYMOUS WITH one of the very few diving products to have become iconic - the Plana Avanti fin, launched more than 30 years ago. And ever since, Mares has struggled to eclipse the Avanti's reputation and entice divers with a completely new type of fin.
