19-year-old dies on Zakynthos freediveA British watersports instructor has died while freediving off the island of Zakynthos in Greece.

Harry Byatt, 19, was using a monofin and mask when he failed to resurface from a dive on Sunday, 6 August. A spokesman for the Peligoni Club resort where Byatt worked told the BBC that the alarm was not raised until five minutes after he had started his dive.

Byatt was found unconscious on the seabed at a depth of 30m and brought to the surface, although it was unclear from reports how this was achieved and by whom. The Peligoni Club offers a range of surface watersports but appears to have no scuba-diving facility.

Byatt was taken onto a rescue boat and back to shore where CPR was applied by local and visiting medical professionals, but he was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

The Peligoni Club has stated that it is working with the authorities to establish the exact circumstances of the death. A coroner’s report is being prepared.
