Cancer survival in the UK has doubled in the past 40 years, and the average number of survival years has also increased. As a result, more and more people are resuming their work, sport, and daily lives following treatment and/or surgery for cancer.
As part of DDRC Healthcare¹s continuing Health of Divers project, researchers from the Plymouth-based diving & hyperbaric medicine specialist are hoping to gain a better insight into cancer and diving and are asking scuba-divers who have experienced the disease to participate in an online survey.
“Research shows that physical activity may have beneficial effects for several aspects of cancer survivorship,” says DDRC Healthcare, which hopes to find out how divers who have cancer or have had it in the past view the sport.
It wants to find out if diving played a part in their recovery and whether they have continued to dive or had to give up their pastime as a result of the illness.
The online questionnaire is anonymous. “As in all our other surveys, all the information given us will be completely untraceable to participating divers,” says the organisation.
There are 40 questions in all but DDRC Healthcare says that participants will not have to answer all of them, so the survey should take no more than five minutes to complete.
Previous DDRC Healthcare diver surveys have covered subjects as diverse as alcohol, drugs and dental and mental health.
